The Middle School Musical mounted its first production in 1995 in partnership with the West Linn-Wilsonville School District. The MSM is not set up like the other drama programs in the district. It is an after school, no cut experience spread over all the middle schools and is mostly self-funded We are able to stage full length Broadway shows as a result of support from various groups. The school district provides custodial service, access to the building for rehearsals and production and bus service for the students of all three middle schools to rehearse together. Parent volunteers help make all aspects of the plays come together, from set construction and costuming to ticket management. Local businesses are sometimes involved as sponsors for various aspects of the production. Income from ticket sales to performances and a participation fee is part of the funding. The orchestra is composed of adult volunteers, high school students and some paid professionals. Our backstage tech is done by high school students, most of whom are alumni of the MSM. This program has become a strong component of the arts curriculum in the district. The MSM is a major contributor in making the WLWV School District strong in the arts. No student is ever turned away and in our effort to give everyone a moment in the spotlight, we double-cast the entire show rehearsing two complete casts of about 60 seventh and eighth graders in each cast.
Music and Arts Partners has given strong contributing support through their yearly concessions profit returns. The past couple years, due to rising costs in licensing and production, MAP has awarded the MSM two generous grants to help us continue this program.
